I’ll let you in a secret. On days when I have a morning class, my breakfast is pretty dismal. It often is comprised of a couple Presidents Choice fruit and nut or granola bars and nothing else. I use to eat a handful of raw nuts in my car on my way to class but the past couple months my IBS has been really acting up and I can’t handle eating so many nuts in one sitting (color me sad, because pistachios are pretty much my favorite thing in the nut world). So while I preach to my clients that they need to eat a good sized breakfast complete with protein and whole grain carbs I don’t always follow my own advice. The old “Do what I say, not as I do” saying comes to mind, and it’s something I’m actively trying to improve.
Recently, Angus Reid Forum conducted a survey on behalf of Special K Protein: What Fills You Up. In the survey they asked Canadians about their morning eating habits and while 94% of women surveyed knew that eating protein in the morning will help satisfy their hunger, approximately one out of every three admitted that their breakfast doesn’t contain enough protein. Looks like I’m not the only one struggling!
The survey didn’t only ask about breakfast though, it also inquired about other areas of our lives and what fills them up. Here are a few of the other statistics:
It also revealed that Canadian women love to live an active life. Keeping busy (53%), taking time for personal interests or hobbies (43%) and exercising (38%) are among the leading ways women find fulfillment emotionally and spiritually.
“With Canadian women putting so much value on staying active, a satisfying, protein-rich breakfast that will keep them full is a smart way to start the day and avoid temptation. It really is the secret to willpower so they can stay on track,” says Natasha Millar, Director, Adult Brands, Kellogg Canada Inc. “New Kellogg’s Special K Protein Cereal is just the latest in a wide range of Special Kofferings designed to support women in their weight management journey.”
One in four women also confessed that if their breakfast does not fill them up, they find themselves more tempted by cravings throughout the morning. And, when the urge to snack arises, one third admit lack of willpower causes them to stray from their healthy habits. But it is convenience that is the biggest culprit (53%) leading to less healthy food choices.

To find out first-hand what is most important to women, Kellogg’s Special K Protein Cereal took to the streets and asked, “What fills you up?” Family once again topped the list, and giving back, travel and work are also important.
