Hi everybody! I’ve got a great giveaway for you but I have to wit to confirm something with the sponsor before it can go live. Hopefully it’ll be up in the next day or two, in the meantime I thought I would share my tentative race schedule for 2013.
I would like to pre-face this by saying that I run because I enjoy it, and because it is important for me to cross train in order to avoid injury. I don’t run because I think I need or should exercise more. I don’t want anyone to think that even though they exercise for an hour 3-5 times/week that they too should take up another activity. I teach 2-3 classes/day 6 days/week. Most of those classes are Zumba classes which leave me wide open for muscle imbalances – which lead to injuries. Running (even on a un-regular basis) helps to keep those muscle imbalances in check therefore making me stronger and better able to do my job. The trick is making sure I cross train without overtraining (a tough task when you are already logging 13 hours of exercise/week) and that I get enough rest. You will notice that I stick to shorter races – ones that don’t require a lot of training or logging a lot of pre-race miles. That way I get the fun of racing without the added worry and stress on my body.
Okay. Now that, that’s out of the way! Here is my race plan for 2013:
Bluenose Marathon – 10K May 19, 2013
I’ve participated in the Bluenose Marathon before but only in the 5K category so this will be my first time 10k’ing it around Halifax. FYI – the hills in Downtown Halifax are a bit of a bi*ch. They are nasty during the 5K and I can’t imagine they will be any nicer during the 10K!
Sole Sisters 5K – June 8, 2013
Here in Nova Scotia we don’t get all the fun funs you get in larger areas. No colour runs (I’m DYING to do one of those!), and as far as I know this is the only women only race in Nova Scotia. I’m pretty excited because not only is the race shirt adorable, but there is a chocolate stop along the route. PEOPLE. A CHOCOLATE STOP. I think it’s going to be super fun, and apparently a lot of other people think it’ll be fun too because it’s already sold out
Mud Hero – July 6, 2013
Like I mentioned above we don’t get a lot of the fun runs other people do so when I found out about the Mud Hero Mud Run I was crazy excited.
I have big hopes that I will have a Go-Pro camera to record this one.
Valley Harvest Marathon – October 13, 2013
I’ve run the Valley Harvest 5K the past two years, but this year I think I will run the 10K or possibly even the Half Marathon. I’m waiting until August to see how my fall schedule is shaping up before deciding on this one. I love this race, partly because it’s close to home, but also because I think it’s a wonderful way to kick of Thanksgiving. Plus it gives you an excuse to eat more dessert.
There are a few other races that I’m still thinking about, but these are the four I’m definitely doing. Races can be expensive and since one of my goals for the year is to spend less and save more I’m becoming quite critical about how I spend my money. The one race I’m really considering adding to my list is the “Not Since Moses” race that I’ve wanted to do for the past few years. The problem is it’s quite a distance away and I’m not keen on getting up crazy early and driving for hours and hours for a race. Yes I know I”m a baby. However, I think that running on the ocean floor would be worth it in the end.
So that is my race schedule for 2013. Nothing crazy, but I think the races I’ve chosen should be a lot of fun!
